This article will be a little off topic. But bear with me people, it will be interesting.
I’ve always wondered how you pronounce the name of the cosmetic brand NYX. Is it just one word, an abbreviation or maybe it’s an acronym? Even though I am not sure how to say NYX it always reminds me of the Greek goddess Nyx. So in this article I want to tell you about the beautiful goddess Nyx.
Nyx was the goddess of the night, and the mother of personified gods such as Hypnos (sleep) and Thánatos (death). She doesn’t appear a lot in the Greek myths, but she was known for her exceptional beauty and power.
The myth tells that Chaos created Gaea (earth), Nyx (night) and Erebos (deep darkness or shadow). With her brother Erebus she made Aether (atmosphere) and Hemera (day). In some myths she also gave birth to Apathe (deceit), Geras (age), the Moerae (the three fates), Momos (blame) and Philotes (tenderness), most of them resided in the underworld. Orpheus describes her as a goddess with incredible black wings, residing in the underworld by day and came out at night. She would be accompanied by Wind and put a silver egg in the lap of darkness.
In Ilias by Homerus he writes that because she was older and more powerful then Zeus he feared her and commanded her wishes. On one of Heracles’ quests Hypnos lulled Zeus into a sleep to create a storm. When Zeus awoke and saw that Heracles has gotten off course he was furious and threatened to throw Hypnos into the depts of Erebus for punishment. When Hypnos fled into the arms of his mother Nyx, Zeus recanted. He didn’t dare to speak up to the more powerful goddess of night. Nyx lived in Tartarus which was considered both a place and also the name of her brother. The stories say that at and above the gates of Tartarus are the sources and ends of heaven, earth and sea. It is said that both Day and Night live here in the same home, behind the gates of Tartarus yet they are never there at the same time. The myths say that when one, either night or day, crosses the earth, the other will wait at home. They will greet each other only at the threshold where Atlas holds up heaven. Her element was water, her planet the moon, her colors silver and black, her animals owls and bats and her associated symbols were stars on a black veil. Nyx had prophetic powers and was usually depicted riding a chariot, with trailing stars bringing the night, and accompanied by her two sons Hypnos and Thánatos. She could be helpful or harmful to mankind, bringing either sleep or death.
Well after this history lesson I won’t quiz you, so put away your pen and paper. I think this goddess kind of fits the cosmetic brand, since she was supposed to be very pretty and powerful. And isn’t that what we all want to be, confident and beautiful? I know I do.
Until next time!
